“Who” am I?

I’m 53 years old, an Electronics Engineer (1992) and an MBA from IIM Bangalore (1994).
But that’s not who I am. That’s just my education.

Till 2009 I was in a high profile corporate Marketing career, having contributed to the building of brands such as Godrej, Taj Mahal Tea, Sony and Pril amongst others. My last corporate role was that of a VP, Sales & Marketing in a real-estate company.
But that’s not who I am either. That’s just my corporate career.

After getting laid off as a direct consequence of the 2008-2009 global recession I started my journey of self-employment. At first I gave marketing consultancy to small businesses, then ventured into motivational workshops and corporate training and since 2012 I’ve been a full-time independent life coach.

But that’s still not who I am. And who I most definitely NOT AM is – I’m not a guru. I’m not a genius. Nor am I a saint.

I constantly remind myself that WHO I REALLY AM is an ordinary person committed to an extraordinary life.

I say ordinary person because my life’s circumstances are as ordinary as anyone else’s. I too have difficult long-term goals. I too face conflicts in day to day life. I have fear like anyone else. I too feel demotivated at times and often face breakdowns in my relationships, in my career and in my life in general.

But it’s who I am that helps me confront the unworkability of my life with extraordinary POWER and helps me recover really quickly whenever I get upset or stressed (usually in a matter of minutes). It’s who I am who makes sure that fear doesn’t stop me from getting whatever I want in my life. And that in turn helps me live a life of my choosing, not a life that is constrained and limited by my circumstances, by people who surround me or by my past.

In my journey of life I’ve overcome severe alcohol addiction, come out of a massive debt trap (brought Rs 25 lacs+ of credit card and personal loans to ZERO and as a result brought my CIBIL credit rating/score from a disastrous 512 out of 900 to an outstanding 823 out of 900 ) and transformed my relationship with my wife from one that was broken to one that is like a honeymoon even 20 years after marriage. And of course I found my passion and purpose and made a transition from a career that seemed meaningless to one that is like a dream come true.  Hey.. I also lost a lot of weight. 27 kgs to be precise. I feel so much lighter and powerful now!

My coaching school often tells me.. “Milind, people hire you as their coach, not because of what you know or how you coach or what results they believe you can create for them, but because of WHO YOU ARE (although they do this sub-consciously).”

The people I coach – surgeons, businessmen and women, high-court lawyers, IT professionals, homemakers, actually people from all walks of life – WHO THEY ARE becomes a part of me when I coach. It keeps me real and raw and grounded. It helps me connect phenomenally with others just by listening to them.

And needless to add, “who” I am becomes a part of people I coach.

It’s a win-win deal you see. It’s what I call the deal of the century.
